Abstract:

Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with limited treatment options that primarily focus on symptom management rather than addressing the underlying pathology. Recent advances in regenerative medicine, specifically stem cell therapy, have emerged as promising therapeutic approaches for cardiovascular cardiac tissue regeneration in heart failure patients. Stem cells, including pluripotent stem cells (PSCs), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs), have demonstrated the potential to repair damaged cardiac tissue, restore heart function, and improve long-term outcomes. These cells exert their regenerative effects through several mechanisms, including paracrine signaling, tissue repair, and angiogenesis. Despite their potential, clinical application of stem cell therapy for HF remains challenging due to issues related to cell survival, engraftment, and long-term efficacy. Recent studies have focused on optimizing protocols for cell sourcing, delivery methods, and combinations with biomaterials or gene therapies to enhance therapeutic outcomes. This review discusses the current advancements in stem cell-based therapies for heart failure, including the mechanisms of action, clinical trial results, and future directions. It highlights the potential of stem cells to regenerate the myocardium, reduce fibrosis, and improve cardiac function. Additionally, the review addresses the challenges and limitations faced in the translation of these therapies from bench to bedside. Ultimately, stem cell therapy holds immense promise in revolutionizing the management of heart failure, but further research is required to overcome existing barriers and realize its full potential in clinical practice.
